Junior Welcome
Welcome to season 2010-2011. I hope Winter has been good to you all and that your cricketing children have been busy enjoying their winter sport.
The Club is growing from strength to strength. Season 2010-11 will see us field at least 7 teams, plus Milo In2Cricket. We will have 3 Under 10s (all on Friday night), 3 Under 12s (2 on Friday and 1 on Saturday morning) and 1 Under 14 (Sat).
Team Managers needed
As the Club is getting quite big now, with an expected 120+ cricketers this season, contributions from the parent community are essential for long term sustainability and success. As a community we need to provide Team Managers and coaches for all teams. Without these roles, our children can’t play cricket and I encourage you to please consider what you can do to help your club. A special thanks to Pete Lester, Sunil Piers, Brett Salter, Paul Angus, Derek Clark, Darren Wharton, Wil Scully and Glen Mackie who have already accepted Team Manager roles. Cricketing experience or expertise is not required to fill this role, it is more about preparation and organising.
Junior Committee
The Club has assembled a Junior Committee, which is tasked with the responsibility of running the Junior Section throughout the season. The Committee looks like this:
Junior Manager: Dave Cowell - 0438 569822 dgcowell@live.com.au
Junior Secretary: Paul Aspin - 0425 854 667 pakmari@optusnet.com.au
Junior Treasurer: Derek Clark - 0439 380 273 dclark@ckclothing.com.au
Coaching coordinator : Darren Wharton - 0417 367426 darren.wharton@suncorp.com.au
This season, all coaches and Team Managers will have passed a ‘Working With Children’ check so you can be confident in those looking after your children.

Healthy Eating Program
In an effort to promote healthy lifestyles for our young players, the Nunawading Pirates Junior Cricket Club is launching our Encouraging Healthy Eating Program.
Adopting healthy eating habits at a young age can prevent medical problems such as type 2 diabetes and child obesity so the Nunawading Junior Cricket Club committee is pleased to announce our Encouraging Healthy Eating Program aimed at our young players.
Whilst we encourage this among our players and parents, we, in no way, are trying to influence parents to raise their children in any other way than they believe appropriate. We feel that encouraging healthy eating among the players in conjunction with their involvement in cricket, a healthy, outdoor, physically active sport will set a pattern of healthy living that will benefit all in the long term.
It is our aim to ensure that all players and their families benefit from the Nunawading Junior Cricket Club experience and that when their time with the junior club is over both they and the club will be richer for the mutual involvement.
We believe that a healthy eating policy reflects this philosophy and we will endeavour to support this by undertaking the following:
- Having free fruit available to the children before and after their games.
- Having a parent roster to provide oranges/apples/bananas for the break between innings.
- Having a parent roster to provide salads for our post match gold coin donation (per family) BBQs.
- Having fruit cups on sale at the bar/canteen.
- Having fruit juices on sale at the bar/canteen as well as the usual soft drinks.
- Pursuing healthy eating sponsorships with local businesses to minimize the cost to parents and the club.
- Displaying healthy eating advertising in the clubrooms.
- Having a dietician address the players and their parents to discuss the benefits of healthy eating and how food plays a part in sports preparation.
- Having iced water as well as the usual free cordial available on game days.
- Awarding Healthy Eating certificates to the children who display good healthy eating habits.
We encourage parents and spectators to embrace this policy and thank you all for your involvement over the coming months.
Junior Coaches
The pivotal role is that of Team coach. Each team requires a cricket coach to provide group and 1-1 coaching and game development at practice times and mentoring, umpiring, on-field assistance on match days. This is a vital role that will help ensure our cricketers play to the best of their ability. All coaches should be Cricket Australia Level 1 certified and have Working With Children clearance. The Club will sponsor budding coaches on Level 1 training (1 day plus a few hours web based learning) and these sessions are taking place now.
The Club has recruited 2 new coaches from Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA). Pennie Harrison (daughter of new senior Club coach Paul Harrison) and Daniel Abraham will join the Pirates as Junior Coaches. The Sports Development Program is a joint initiative between Cricket Victoria, Sports Education and Development Australia, partner host schools, and Victoria University, specifically designed for young people interested in a career in Sport and Recreation or other like industries. The program offers current year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to complete their education within the Sport and Recreation industry whilst forging a pathway to meaningful employment or further study. We are delighted to have Pennie and Daniel at Nuna and welcome them to the Club.
Location of the Ground
The Pirates are located at Mahoneys Reserve, in Mahoneys Rd, Forest Hill.
