Coaching approach this season

This season we will have some new coaches join the club as part of the Cricket Victoria Student Sports Development Program who will work with the Under 10s mainly and assist with training and implementation of new ideas surrounding training and match preparation.

We plan to have in place a system where your child’s needs will be met through structured weekly training session, extra voluntary sessions and identified skill enhancement opportunities.  Not only do we want the kids to be the best players they can we hope to give them an overall education in the game of cricket in a fun, safe, community environment.

We are also implementing a dispute resolution process and hope that will be aimed at ensuring protections and safety of all kids in the junior program and setting expectation for kids and parents to be guided by.  We will also forward a spectators code of conduct.  Behaviour outside of this code of conduct will not be tolerated.

Finally and of significant importance is the role of the parents.  We need parents as coaches, team managers, match day assistants and just about any other thing needed to field a team in the purple and gold.  Please express your interest in these roles.  We need at least two Under 12s coaches and an Under 14s coach and hopefully some will return from last year but we cannot and will not field team without these roles being filled.

You will be given all the support required by the club and a coaching plan from which to operate.  I will be around to support you as much as you need and the club will pay for any coaching accreditation required.

We are really committed to making the club bigger, better and stronger in the coming years and we need committed people to assist us in this so please contact Darren Wharton on 0417 367 426 should you wish to assist.

 Voluntary Extra Training Session

Every second Sunday a voluntary extra session will be available to players identified by the respective coaches who have the ability, aptitude or desire to further their cricket education.

This will be conducted at the club in the nets and on the field by Nunawading Junior Cricket Club coaching coordinator Darren Wharton and will comprise of a combination of net sessions, individual instruction, group education, physical fitness (running) and practice matches.

Confirmation of attendance at these sessions will be required and a quorum of twelve players will be required or training will not take place.

Players across all three age groups will be able to participate and, where appropriate, will train together with players from the Under 14s assisting with the Under 12s and under 10s as part of their cricket education and leadership development.

This is intended to be a light hearted, fun and educational extra to the individual player’s needs. This will take place from 10.30am – 11.30 every second Sunday morning.

Team Structure

This season we are aiming to field:

Milo in2CRICKET

We hope to run 30 children in 2 groups, one group for younger children for those who need to learn base motor skills like catching and throwing etc and a second group aimed at older children who have the basics and would benefit more from a more advanced program preparing them for Under 10 non-competitive cricket. Some of these children may also wish to play the odd Under 10 game.

Under Age competition

3 Under 10 teams playing on Friday night

2 Under 12 teams, playing on Friday night

1 Under 12 team, playing on Saturday morning

1 Under 14 team, playing on Saturday morning

1 Under 16 team, playing on Saturday morning

Home games will be held at Mahoneys Reserve.

Under 10s:

Under 10s is non-competitive, fun cricket. The aim is that each player bowls and bats for the same number of balls in a 100-120 ball innings. The emphasis is not on competition or winning but simply having fun.

Under 12s:

This season, we will nominate to have 1 team in each of Friday B & C grade and Saturday C grade. C Grade is non-competitive, meaning there are no ladders and no finals. We will still score and notionally win or lose but the results will not go towards playing in finals. This will suit our younger group as we are less likely to play against teams much better than us who are more serious about winning rather than participating and having fun. When registering your children, please advise of any preference for playing on Friday or Saturday.

Also, if your child is still Under 10 but is keen to play more serious cricket, we would be pleased to speak to you about he or she playing Under 12s. We may also approach you about this if we feel he or she is ready.

Under 14s:

The team will be nominated for Under 14C and will play on Saturday mornings from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Under 14C is a normal, competitive grade with results, ladders and finals.

Any cricketers playing on Friday night and interested in playing on Saturdays as well should also let Paul Aspin, Junior Secretary know. Paying preference will be given to those registered for Saturday cricket only of course.

Friday Night's at Bob Saker Oval

Friday nights are a family night each week over summer. Whilst cricket is played on all 3 grounds at our Mahoneys Rd complex, the bbq is fired up and a cold drink is available over the bar. Families meet after the game for dinner and a drink and match reports are read out and player encouragement awards are given out.

Friday nights are a great family night, a cold drink for Mums and Dads and a bbq for everyone after the activities complete

Canteen

Many of you would be unaware that we have a fully function canteen downstairs next to the equipment room. This has not been utilised well by our club for a long time. The Club is seeking expressions of interest from anyone who may be interested in running the canteen on Friday nights, and possibly Saturdays. All equipment will be provided and we would be prepared to enter into a profit sharing or license agreement with anyone interested in running a small catering business from there. You can be assured of our full support and, if you are interested, please contact me.

Match Day Co-ordinators

Two important roles are the Friday and Saturday co-ordinators. These roles are responsible for ensuring all support requirements are met such as opening the rooms, ensuring catering is as required, ensuring sunscreen, drinks, first aid etc are ready and available. These roles are currently unfilled and I ask all parents to please consider making yourself available to help. The main requirement is to arrive early, open up and make sure each ground is ready with equipment etc, that tea and coffee etc are ready and it.

 Friday BBQs

Friday is our big night of the week with most teams playing and the social rooms filled with families after the games. A key requirement is to ensure catering is well managed. Food must be purchased, delivered, cooked and served. Simon Keele has looked after this almost single handedly over the last 3 seasons and it is time to give him a break. Can you help? Unless we can find someone to manage this very important role, the duties will be spread amongst home teams and a cooking roster will be allocated.
